Four Horsemen

Albrecht Dürer
German 1471-1528

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, woodcut, 1496-98 (photo: Phil)

Apocalypse--from the Greek word apokalypsis, meaning revelation or lifting of a veil--was a fitting subject for the eve of the year 2000. The richly complex imagery of the Book of Revelation is well suited to artistic interpretation, explored in this exhibition in works ranging from Albrecht Dürer's famous woodcuts to images by diverse artists including William Blake, Odilon Redon, and Jim Dine.

Eleven by Eleven by Eleven for Puffin

This portfolio of eleven original prints (each eleven by eleven inches) was produced in honor of DAC Curator Emerita Ellen G. D'Oench, known to her friends as "Puffin."

The eleven artists who contributed to the project are Laurent de Brunhoff, Jacqueline Gourevitch, Nona Hershey, William Johnston, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Phyllis McGibbon, William McCarthy, Sandra Newbury, Philip Trager, David Schorr, and Keiji Shinohara, all of whom have worked with Ellen D'Oench. The portfolio includes an essay written by Andrew Szegedy-Maszak.

Tuesday 26 October - Sunday 12 December 1999

David Schorr, professor of art, gave an Art à la mode gallery on both exhibitions at 12:15 on Wednesday 10 November.
