FDAC Picnic and Auction 2008

The Summer Fun Began on Saturday, May 17!

The Friends of the Davison Art Center invited the public to the FDAC Picnic and Auction 2008. Proceeds from this event benefit the Davison Art Center Collection.

2008 FDAC Auction: Green painting

Samuel Magee Green II (American, 1909-1995), Untitled (Cape May, New Jersey shore), oil painting on board, 33" x 85" (photo: R. Brault)

One featured item was a large painting, shown above, by Samuel Green. As suggested by the images below, among the many other lots up for bid were prints (the one at lower left depicts Wesleyan's Russell House), fine carpets, unique works of art, historic maps, and a wide variety of other objects.

The event took place on Saturday 17 May 2008:

3:30-5:30 p.m.: Festivities began with a picnic and silent auction, during which attendees could:

  • Bring a picnic and dine informally on the lawn or formally at tables set up around the picturesque Alsop House grounds and fountain.
  • Peruse catalogued items for the Main Auction. They were on display in the front rooms of the Alsop House.
  • Put their eBay® skills to use with the Silent Auction, a fun-filled competitive sale of many desirable uncatalogued items in all price ranges.

6:30 p.m.: Main Auction began. David Redden, Vice Chairman of Sotheby's, Inc., and Wesleyan Class of 1970, opened the bidding for an impressive variety of offerings including:

  • fine works of art (including the wooden sculpture at right, by John Martin)
  • antiques
  • decorative items
  • professional services
  • vacation accommodations
  • unique special offers and opportunities

The Main Auction catalogue was mailed in printed form to each registered attendee. Still available for download is a PDF version of the catalogue (this 800 KB file, in "PDF" format, may download slowly over some Internet connections). The PDF and paper versions contain all of the same information about the objects (aside from minor reformatting, the only difference between the two is the removal of donor information from the PDF for privacy reasons).

Reservations:

Space was limited, and we strongly encouraged advance reservations. Invitations and registration forms were mailed; it also was possible to download, print, and mail the registration form (in PDF format). We accept cash or checks only for admission and auction items.
