Heirloom Discovery Day

On occasion the Friends of the Davison Art Center sponsor an Heirloom Discovery Day to benefit the DAC Collection. The most recent such event was held Saturday 18 May 1996.

Heirloom Discovery Day

This Sotheby's Heirloom Discovery Day was the main FDAC-sponsored event for the 1995-96 academic year. Chaired by Nancy Smith, it netted nearly $2,500 for new acquisitions. A Friday night members-only party organized by Rosemary and Alain Munkittrick was a rousing social success. More than 100 guests enjoyed a lively and jolly evening with open bar, excellent hors d'oeuvres, a delicious box supper, and a piano player who never quit.

Adding great panache to the evening was David Redden '70, a director of Sotheby's North and South America. He survived a four-hour traffic jam en route from New York to Middletown, arriving late but with his usual aplomb and verve to deliver a half-hour slide lecture "The Adventures of an Auctioneer." Redden discussed the Jackie Onassis auction, and fascinated us with anecdotes about many other "finds" as well. Before his talk, members with their treasures lined up at the three Sotheby's expert's tables for free appraisals.

The public appraisal on Saturday was beautifully organized by Martha Crenshaw and Nancy Albert with the help of a cadre of volunteers. Ticket sales were augmented by the Sotheby's experts' visits to five individual houses and one institution in the Middletown area. For a charge of $250, the experts offered appraisals on up to twenty-five items at each place they visited.

The benefit's earnings funded new DAC acquisitions including an important Mannerist print, Apollo and Marsyas, 1536, by Melchior Meier, a German artist working in Italy.
