Design: Color

The background color for all pages in the DAC website is white. Extensive experimentation with other background colors in various stages of the site's development have made it clear that any other consistently adopted color too easily overpowers (or even perceptually shifts) the subtle tonalities of images of many works of art on paper, which constitute the DAC's core holdings. The one exception to this could have been a black background, but this still would be ill-suited for use on the entire museum site due to design and legibility issues. For these reasons, uniformly white backgrounds offer in this case the best combination of tonal compatibility with images from the collection, an ideal backdrop for easily readable text, and visual consistency across the museum site.
