Wesleyan
is a liberal arts college with approximately 2,800 undergraduates and a
strong commitment to student diversity, educational innovation, and
intellectual freedom. The
Dance Department offers a B.A. in dance, emphasizing artistic excellence
enhanced by scholarly inquiry in Experimental and World Dance. A distinctive feature of the major is its extensive roster of
classes that encompass both traditions.
The department supports a performance schedule consisting of nineteen
events, showcased yearly in the
Breaking Ground and DanceMasters series. Students choreograph and perform in a minimum of five concerts,
and faculty members choreograph and perform yearly in at least two
concerts. Performances take
place in 3 on-campus theaters, which seat from 175-400. Other performing opportunities exist through campus in student
productions, and all Teaching Workshop students teach in local public
schools or on campus. Most
students partake in dance at some point in their undergraduate
education, regardless of whether they major or not.
