Peer Advising Program

The SARN Peer Advising Program provides students with a well-informed resource about the curriculum and course registration, as well as academic resource referrals, beginning with New Student Orientation and continuing throughout the year.

The Program is coordinated through the Student Academic Resources Network (SARN). It will help prepare students for their initial meetings with faculty advisors and support the academic achievement and success of all students. The training and supervision of the Peer Advisors will be administered by the Associate Dean of Student Academic Resources in close cooperation with Academic Affairs and SARN.

Peer Advisor responsibilities vary according to the academic year calendar. Peer Advisors play a key supportive role during New Student Orientation. In combination with other important advising resources (e.g., registration materials sent in the summer, the on-line advisee guidelines, residence hall meetings, etc.), they assist new students in preparing for their individual meetings with their advisors. Specifically, they are available in the residence halls the night preceding the individual meetings with faculty advisors and the submission of course requests, and the night preceding course adjustment day. In addition, they participate in the First Year Matters program that extends orientation activities into the academic year. Peer Advisors give individual peer advice and hold sessions for groups of students regarding time management, study and exam preparation strategies.

Beyond Orientation, SARN Peer Advisors maintain a regular presence in the residence halls and on-line throughout the academic year. They are on hand to assist students with registration questions in November and April, and are available to answer specific student needs and provide referrals related to academic support services.
