Opportunities of Interest to Sophomores
Many academic decisions and choices are made during the sophomore year. Academic planning, not just random course selection, is very important. Taking advantage of leadership development opportunities, participating in community service, or getting involved in student organizations may be helpful, too. The resources and topics listed below will assist students with collecting accurate information, evaluating their interests, using resources, and moving forward with choosing a major.
Faculty/Sophomore Supper Series
Enoy a three-course meal and talk with a professor about his or her research and teaching.

Community Service Work
Credit Analysis Report (e-portfolio)
The credit analysis is a review of a student's academic record that shows progress towards meeting graduation requirements with regard to credits and other academic regulations. It is a tool to monitor oversubscription and flags potential problems that may affect a students eventual completion of graduation requirements. It does not address major requirements.

Marina Melendez
The class dean supports students as they develop educational goals and make progress toward meeting the graduation requirements. She has drop-in hours daily and is available for individual appointments.

Domestic Study Programs (Non-Resident Study)

General Education Report (e-portfolio)
Students are encouraged to bring breadth to their programs of study through the Gen Ed Expectations. The General Education Report shows the status of a students compliance with Gen Ed expectations.
Health Education: WesWell
This resource promotes good health of mind, body, and spirit.
Office of Behavioral Health for Students
This office provides individual and group psychotherapy; workshops and clinics on a variety of topics such as inter-personal relationships, stress management, alcoholism, etc.
Leave of Absence Application
An academic or non-academic leave of absence application is available for students who request time away.
Major Declaration Guide
Students declare a major in the second semester of their sophomore year. The
deadlines to submit the Major Declaration Card are October 19, 2007 for students
who are second semester sophomores in the fall, and March 7, 2008 for students who are second semester sophomores in the spring. Major Declaration packets are distributed early in the spring term.
Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship
This mentoring program supports students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups interested in pursuing careers as scholars and university teachers in selected fields of study.
Pre-Law Advising
Students considering law school and the legal field should consult with an advisor in the Career Resource Center.
Pre-Med Advising
Students interested in attending medical, dental, or veterinary school should talk with a health professions advisor available in the Career Resource Center.
Study Abroad
Students wishing to study at non-U.S. universities should review the programs available at the Office of International Studies.
University Major
This Major is an interdisciplinary program of study designed by the student and sponsored by at least three faculty members.
Venture Consortium Programs
For students who are thinking of taking time off, College Venture offers experiential opportunities and access to the jobs listed with the College Venture Job Bank. (These are short-term job opportunities in the non-profit, private, and government sectors, with a particular emphasis on socially-responsible organizations.)
