FEAS Center/Music Lecture: Wang Siqi: Visiting Scholar, Music Department, Wesleyan University Henan University, China

Issues in China's Contemporary Pop Music Studies (1986-1992) Since 1978, with the implementation of the Reform and Open Door policy, significant changes have taken place in China's society and culture. An important cultural form, China's contemporary pop (CCP) has flourished and become an important component of today's popular culture. In its near thirty years of evolvement, CCP has moved from its initial marginalized statues to become an active part of the cultural mainstream, and the most influential music culture in China's society. The talk will discuss the different periods in CCP's history, focusing on the periods between 1986 to 1992. It will demonstrate the interactive dynamics between CCP and its social-cultural environment, as well as explore the characteristics of their relationships. Co-sponsored with the Music Department

The common and often under appreciated versatility of the circle will play significantly in this de-mystification of the ancient arts as Master Zhang brings this complex and cosmic theory down to a very human, personal and useful level. FEAS: Hagop Sarkissian, Assistant Professor Department of Philosophy, Baruch College, CUNY

When You Think It's Bad, It's Worse Than You Think: Confucian Ethics and the Benefit of a Doubt We often find ourselves thinking of others as boring, nauseating, dim, dodgy, clumsy, or otherwise irritating or unpleasant. What's the right thing to do when we have such thoughts? Some philosophers argue we ought to be civil and conceal them, lest others pick up on them and feel disrespected. Drawing on experimental psychology and classical Confucianism, Sarkissian will argue otherwise, suggesting that we ought to (literally) doubt such appraisals and be wary of their veracity.

Understanding Buddhism through the Arts This illustrated presentation will trace the development of Buddhist philosophy from its Indian origins to the present day. While the basic teachings of Buddhism appear to become more complex over time, carefully observing the art can bring a clearer understanding of the continuing concepts and message. Art spanning nearly two thousand years have been selected as a bridge to the present exhibition.

Little National Subjects and Wartime Reading Practice The popular fiction published in Japan during the late 1930s and early 1940s has been believed to possess little critical value, and is often linked with complicity in the war effort. However, closer examination of literary texts shows the creativity and independence of these readers, especially young boys, then grouped as sho kokumin (little national subjects).

Site Fights: How Industrialized Democracies Handle Unwanted Projects? One of the most vexing problems for governments is building controversial facilities that serve the needs of all citizens but have adverse consequences for host communities. When protests arise over nuclear power plants, dams, and airports, agencies regularly rely on the coercive powers of the modern state. Drawing upon fieldwork and interviews with bureaucrats and activists, this lecture illuminates key case studies from Japan, France, and the United States.

Violent Democracy: Ruffians in Modern Japanese Politics: This lecture focuses on the soshi who emerged on Japan's political stage in the early 1880s as political activists who championed the causes of freedom and people's rights. But by the end of the decade, they were less liberal and more professional, "yakuza-like' ruffians as who wanted to make some money by wielding violence for those who sought to influence state policy. The talk will explore both the process political violence as well as the vitality of democracy in Japan.

FEAS: Norman Kutcher: Associate Professor History Department, Syracuse University

Eunuchs and Rulership in Late Imperial China: Eunuchs, castrated male servants of the ruler and his family, were a prominent feature of Chinese court life. At times, some eunuchs became extremely powerful, eclipsing high level officials and even, in one case, the emperor himself. Using fresh sources that include Imperial Household documents, stele inscriptions, and published miscellanies, Kutcher will explore the complexities of the eunuch-emperor relationship.

FEAS: Ellen Widmer, Mayling Soong Professor, East Asian Languages & Literatures Wellesley College

Border Crossing and the Woman Writer: The Case of Gui Maoyi (1762-1835) Gui Maoyi was from Changshu and was a descendant of famed essayist Gui Youguang (1507-71). She studied poetry with her father and made the acquaintance of other women poets of her time. Gui's educational background and talent for poetry led her in 1798 to become a disciple of the famed Yuan Mei (1716-98). Toward the end of her life her reputation grew well beyond her own social circle. There are several records of highly successful gentlemen traveling to make her acquaintance in Shanghai. A few of these helped support her during her final years. This lecture focuses upon the transition that Gui made from being Yuan Mei's disciple to becoming a self-supporting writer. She went from being a typically cloistered gentlewoman to a woman well known in her time.

FEAS: Kim Kono Assistant Professor, Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures Smith College

Dangerous Companions: Cultural Cross-Dressing in Colonial Manchuria How dangerous is it to wear the clothing of another culture? Focusing on Imamura Eiji's short story "Companions" (Dtktsha, 1938), this talk will explore representations of Japanese and colonized subjects in colonial Manchuria attempting to "pass" as cultural others. While each of these characters tries to conceal his cultural identity through clothing, the effects of their cross-dressing differ because of their positions within colonial hierarchy. Kono will argue that these instances of cultural cross-dressing ultimately underscore the destabilizing effects of colonial assimilation policy, reveal the fragility of cultural identity and potentially pose a threat to both its participants and the colonial project.
