Good advising is the common responsibility of students and professors. The Department makes advising available to all of its majors; it is up to the majors to make appropriate use of the advising system.
- Students should plan to see their advisors at least twice a semester, once during the
Browsing Period to discuss their plans, and once again for Advisor
Authorization. Please plan ahead. Advisors have regular office hours
and will make special appointments if necessary, but they are not available
every hour of every day.
- Please prepare to make the most of the advising interview. Begin thinking about your
plans early, browse the offerings, and bookmark the courses that interest
you. Remember to raise other issues such as study abroad, honors work,
counting courses from outside the department, and oversubscription well in
advance.
- Completing and updating the Major Requirements Worksheet in your E-Portfolio will
help you and your advisor keep track of your progress through the major. You
may enter the courses you have taken or intend to take to fulfill major
requirements. Your advisor can indicate her/his approval in the left-hand
column. This is especially important for courses from outside the department
and for transfer courses.
- After being admitted to the major, you will be assigned a member of the Department as an
advisor. (Lists of advisor assignments will ordinarily be posted after Spring
break.)
If you wish to be advised by a particular member of the Department you must
obtain that faculty member's agreement in writing prior to
presenting yourself for admission to the major.
- When Department members are absent from their duties for whatever reason
(sabbaticals, leaves, retirements, etc.) the Department Secretary will
reassign their advisees. We do our best to inform you of these changes. In
case of confusion, please check the bulletin board outside Room 204 at Downey
House, 294 High Street.
