Guidelines and Procedures for use of Memorial Chapel

Located at 221 High Street, Wesleyan University’s Memorial Chapel is a multi-denominational chapel that seats up to 530 in traditional pews in two levels, both of which are accessible to individuals with disabilities. The recently renovated Gothic revival brownstone building is air-conditioned and has new sound and lighting systems.

A glass atrium, the Zelnick Pavilion, connects the Chapel to the Patricelli ’92 Theater. It may be utilized for receptions or small dinners. Both the Chapel and Pavilion are available for rental to Wesleyan affiliates and the general public.

General Information

Any type of civil or religious ceremony is permitted but clients must provide their own officiant. The diocese of Norwich permits a Catholic wedding ceremony at Memorial Chapel only for those who have a Wesleyan association, such as alumni, students, employees and their children. Guidelines will be provided upon request.

The rental fee covers the use of the Chapel for the wedding service and for a rehearsal, which must be scheduled with the Coordinator’s Office. An event manager will be present during the time of the wedding ceremony. The use of the Zelnick Pavilion requires an additional rental charge.

Decorating

Arrangements for all visits to the facility for deliveries and decorating must be made in advance with the University Coordinator. All flowers and decorations must be removed immediately after ceremony. No rice, bird seed, confetti or rose petals may be thrown within the building or on the grounds. Candles enclosed in glass, such as votives, are allowed but no open flames are permitted.

Photographs

Wedding photographs may be taken in and in front of the Chapel or in front of the Zelnick Pavilion. Inside use of the Pavilion is only allowed through prior arrangement with the Coordinator’s Office. Under no circumstances will limousines or carriages be allowed on the lawn.

Music

The Holtkamp Opus 2085 organ, designed and built for the renovated Memorial Chapel, is a very comprehensive pipe organ, expressive in both dynamics and timbre of all periods and styles of repertoire. Please contact University Organist Ronald Ebrecht (rebrecht@wesleyan.edu) for more information on the use of the organ and for names of student organists who are authorized to play at weddings.  All arrangements with musicians, including fees and payment, are the responsibility of the client. Rehearsals may only take place during the scheduled rehearsal period. The use of the Chapel grand piano must be arranged with the Coordinator's Office and tuning will involve an additional fee.
