Samuel W. Russell House

Located at the corner of Washington and High Streets, the Russell House; named a National Historic Landmark in 2001; is furnished with period antiques. A ramp for those with disabilities was completed in 2004. Five rooms and a kitchen on the first floor are available for events; one of these rooms opens onto a lovely garden. Restrooms and coat racks are located in the basement. The rental fee includes the use of the Russell House and its existing furniture during the hours specified in the contract and custodial support before and after the event. If additional furniture is to be rented, all arrangements must be made by the University Events and Scheduling Office.

Receptions of up to 100 persons or seated dinners for 60 can be held within the house; larger events necessitate setting up a tent in the back garden at an additional expense. Food and beverages may be provided by any caterer, but they are required to file a certificate of insurance with the Events and Scheduling Office. All non-Wesleyan caterers must meet with the Events and Scheduling Office to go over rules and procedures. The kitchen preparation area is extremely small and caterers should plan accordingly after the site visit. All deliveries by caterers, florists or other support personnel must be arranged in advance. The times of access on the day of the event must also be scheduled with the Events and Scheduling Office.

If liquor is being sold or there is an admission fee for the event, a temporary liquor permit must be obtained.

Dancing is not allowed inside the building, but a dance floor may be set up under the tent.

The use of the grand piano; a 1923 Bechstein donated by the Marcus family; must be arranged with the Events and Scheduling Office and tuning will involve an additional fee.

Because of the historic nature of the facility and fragile condition of much of the interior, decorating must be kept to a minimum. No decorations can be attached to any surface including walls, woodwork, furniture, curtains and light fixtures. Decorations may be placed on tables and mantels but the use of tape, staples, nails and other fastening or adhesive materials is prohibited. All decorations must be removed at the conclusion of your event. If candles are used they must be totally enclosed and protected by glass. The installation of stages, platforms or auxiliary lighting within the building is not allowed. No confetti may be thrown within the building or on the grounds and glitter is absolutely prohibited.
