Forbidden from making films by the Iranian state, Panahi shot this little firecracker in his apartment and had it smuggled out in a birthday cake. Starting as a humble document of the director’s life and ending as a sweeping political allegory, Panahi’s “effort” is sneakily brilliant and brilliantly sneaky, a courageous examination of the 21st century artist.

The Cinema Hold-up

Concheiro crafts a vibrant and wonderfully observed portrait of the tempo and texture of today's Mexican youth culture. Four teenagers from a rundown district of Mexico City decide to rob a movie theater, jeopardizing the one sure thing they have in life: their friendship.

Presented as part of The Spanish Film Club series with the support of Pragda, the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain, and its Program for Cultural Cooperation with U.S. Universities.

Purple Rain

Who is an arrogant, talented young singer from Minneapolis? PRINCE. Who is cool enough to make out with someone named "Apollonia?" PRINCE. Who will ponder his leather-clad reflection in a pool of water and then speed away on his giant motorcycle to give a series of incredible concerts, culminating in a show-stopping rendition of the title song? That's right.

Prepare for a rollicking romp through 18th-Century France, an over-the-top Technicolor world of pantomime fools, lusty ladies, and stab-happy noblemen. Swashbuckling revolutionary Granger (heir apparent to Errol Flynn) flirts with a ditzy Janet Leigh and hides out in a theatre troupe as he aims to duel his way through the aristocracy.
