Fines Appeals Board
Mission Statement: The Appeals Board will adjudicate on
fines of fire safety and facilities violations. The board will follow
University rules as written, while not ignoring individual circumstances.
System for Appeals
- Students will have the right to appeal any fine that
they are given. All appeals are to be made through an online form that allows
students to write an explanation of their appeal. The appeal will be
sent to all 5 members of the Appeals Board prior to each meeting.
- Any student who wishes to appeal a fine must submit
the appeal within 30 days of the date on which the student received
notification of the fine. Notification includes receipt of inspection form,
an email from campus fire safety or facility manager, or other means.
- Students will be notified by a WSA representative by
email of the time and location of the meeting of the Appeals Board.
Students may attend but are not required to unless the Appeals Board
specifically requests a meeting with the student in question. Students
should note that pictures are taken of every violation and are shown during
the appeals committee meeting, whether or not the student is present.
- The Appeals Board will review each appeal, and
adjudicate on the fine. The committee has the ability to table a decision
to the next meeting in the event of a tie or if more information is required
from the student.
- The decisions of the Appeals Board are final.
Structure of the Appeals Board
- The appeals board will consist of 5 members:
- It is encouraged that Fire Safety, Physical Plant, and
the WSA appoint individuals to consistently attend meetings of the Appeals
Board; however, any representative may be sent from any of those groups.
- The Appeals Board will meet consistently on a monthly
basis at a time convenient for all members of the board and the student
body. Additional meetings may be scheduled if necessary.
- If not all members are present at a scheduled meeting,
the members of the Appeals Board that are present will still have the
authority to adjudicate.
Operational Guidelines
- Parents or guardians can not appeal fines on behalf of
students.
- All fines in multiple-occupancy rooms (for example:
one-room doubles, two-room doubles, triples) will be split between roommates
until the person responsible notifies the Appeals Board via email.
- It is highly recommended that common area fines are
appealed by 1 representative of that residential unit.
- The Appeals Board can make recommendations for rule
changes.
