I
am pleased to report that Wesleyan’s 176th year saw many accomplishments. Among the special events, we inaugurated our 16thPresident, Michael S. Roth ’78, during Homecoming/Family Weekend last November. Earlier in the fall, Wesleyan had celebrated Professor of Economics Gary Yohe as our first Nobel Prize co-winner. And at May’s Reunion & Commencement, we welcomed the first class of inductees into our new Athletics Hall of Fame.
In fiscal year 2008 (July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008), Wesleyan raised $44.9 million in cash and commitments combined–the third highest amount ever. We brought in $34.4 million in cash, including $14.5 million through the Wesleyan Fund (with 52% alumni participation), $9 million for the endowmnet, and $4 million for facilities. Reunion classes collectively gave more than $5 million, with the classes of 1983, 1978, and 1973 setting new giving records. The classes of 2003, 1998, and 1978 set new Donor Associate-level gift records. Leadership gifts at Donor Associate levels accounted for nearly 80 percent of the $34.3 million cash total. Thank you!
Last year was also a banner year for Wesleyan academics. Highlights included the hiring of sixteen new faculty members, and several major faculty fellowships and awards, as well as national recognition for scholarly and artistic projects. As part of the continual evolution and enhancement of our curriculum, 165 new courses were added last year. The Middle Eastern Studies initiative led to the enrollment of more than 50 students in Arabic courses. Fulbright, Goldwater, and Watson fellowships were among the prestigious awards won by our students.
If you haven’t been to campus lately, I encourage you to do so–great things are happening here! Plan a trip for Reunion & Commencement Weekend on May 21-24, 2009.
Warm regards,
Ellen Jewett ’81, Chair
University Relations Committee, Board of Trustees
