The NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation (IT) Program has funded over twelve large research institutions to address the lack of women on their science faculty.  These institutions have developed and tested strategies to foster diversity and build strong science departments.

The Geosciences have their own difficulties in building diverse departments and, in fact, the only discipline-specific IT grant was awarded to the Columbia/LDEO geoscience department.

We have been funded through ADVANCE to develop a program to that will contribute to a network of geoscience women faculty in the Northeast.  As part of this grant we are holding two chair workshops, to address diversity issues and creative ways to build a strong department.

The first workshop will be offered on August 4 and 5, 2008 in Middletown, CT.  There are three main topics:

  1. Thinking Broadly & Creatively to Build a Dynamic Department (Dr. Barbara Tewksbury, Hamilton College)
  2. How to attract a diverse applicant pool for faculty positions - STRIDE as an example, (Dr. Samuel Mukasa, University of Michigan,
  3. Advancing to Retreat (Dr. Scott Bair, Ohio State University)

The workshop is open to current and soon–to-be chairs.  Only current chairs and female faculty are being sent this message, so please forward it to a future chair.  You are both welcome to participate.
