Students should first consult the Office of International
Studies. Its web site includes all forms and regulations pertaining to
applications and credits for Wesleyan’s own programs and those officially
approved by Wesleyan. The form, “Wesleyan University Study Abroad Academic
Information,” includes a section on courses abroad that students may count for
credit toward the major.
Courses taken at programs on the approved list of the
Office of International Studies are counted toward university graduation
requirements. The Office sets the credit value of individual courses and assigns
them a department or program identification. Individual departments decide
whether to count specific courses toward the major.
The Government Department does not approve credits for internships in
programs abroad for Wesleyan graduation or department major credit.
For Government Majors. Government majors must have
prior approval by their department advisers to have courses credited toward the
major and toward the departmental concentration. Please give your adviser as
much information as possible (at a minimum a course description and a syllabus
if available) about the courses you want to apply toward the major. Course
offerings may change unpredictably. If you subsequently wish to enroll in a
class for which you have not received prior approval, you should inform your
department adviser immediately.
Independent study projects may count toward the Government
major and a concentration at the discretion of your adviser. Your adviser may
well give tentative approval, subject to a review of your project after you
return.
Second semester sophomores declaring a major should be
accepted into the Government major and assigned an adviser before seeking
departmental approval for specific courses at programs abroad.
Ordinarily two credits may be counted toward the major from courses taken
away from Wesleyan, including both study abroad programs and U.S. institutions.
However, a major who attends a Wesleyan approved program abroad for a full year
may request their adviser to count up to three credits toward the government
major.
Note: This revised policy will apply to all courses approved after February
24, 2004. Courses previously approved for Wesleyan graduation or department
major credit are not affected by this policy.
Approved by the
Department of Government, February 24, 2004
