Transfer of Credits

TRANSFER OF CREDITS FROM U.S. ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS

Students should first consult the Departmental and Program Information and Academic Regulations, which is available in North College in front of the registrar’s office. All requests for permission to transfer credit and supporting materials should be submitted to Ms. DeMicco in the Department Office, Room 116 PAC. All requests must be made before enrolling in the course. There will be no retroactive approval, unless exceptional extenuating circumstances prevented your attaining prior approval.

Credit will only be granted if courses are:

1.      Upper division. Introductory courses may not be counted.

2.      In the field of government (department of “political science” or “politics” at some other institutions).

3.      Equivalent in terms of contact hours, content, and requirements to Wesleyan courses.

4.      Offered at a four year, accredited institution.

5.      Graded. Credit/No credit courses may not be transferred.

Government Department Majors should submit to their Department advisors a completed form, “ Permission to Transfer Credit from Another College or University;  non-Majors should submit this completed form to the Government Department Chair.   The form is available from the Dean’s Office.  In addition, both Majors and non-Majors must submit the following information: a completed

1.      The name and location of the institution at which the course is being offered.

2.      The course name and number, and the number of course hours that the course will meet.

3.      A course syllabus, or some other document specifying the name of the instructor and course requirements, including a list of assigned readings, a description of written and oral assignments, the number of examinations, and the method of evaluation. A syllabus from an earlier offering of the course is acceptable.

If the syllabus is not available, the department will provide only contingent approval. The syllabus must be received before credit is awarded. Majors should be prepared to show their written work to their advisors.  Non-majors should be prepared to show their written work to the Department Chair.

Without proper documentation, students run the risk of taking courses that will not receive credit from the Government Department.

Government majors should consult their advisers before choosing courses. Only two transfer credits may be counted toward the major from courses taken away from Wesleyan, including study abroad programs. (See the department policy on approval of credit from study abroad programs for an exception to this limit of two credits for full-year programs.)

STUDENTS MUST PROVIDE AN ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER WHERE THEY CAN BE REACHED IN CASE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IS NEEDED.
