Financial Aid

Arrangements for assistantships and the awarding of scholarships are made through individual graduate departments. Stipend arrangements vary by department. Applicants should refer to respective departments for details. Under current U.S. federal tax regulations, fellowship stipends to cover the cost of room and board are generally subject to U.S. federal income taxes. You should consider consulting with a tax advisor regarding your particular situation. Limited dependency allowances will be made available for those who demonstrate financial need. Applications for dependency allowances can be obtained from the department chair or the OGSS.

Student loans: Graduate students are eligible to borrow through the Federal Stafford Loan Program providing they are matriculated at least half-time and are either U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens. A Wesleyan Graduate Financial Aid Application available at http://www.wesleyan.edu/finaid/graduates.shtml, a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and a signed copy of the student’s 2004 federal tax return and 2004 W-2(s)  form, are required to determine eligibility. The amount a student may borrow per year is equal to the cost of attendance, to a maximum of $18,500. A student must show financial need to qualify for an interest subsidy for the first $8,500 of loan. The amount not eligible for subsidy can be obtained on an unsubsidized basis. Regardless of whether the interest is subsidized, repayment of principal does not begin until six months after graduation or leaving school. The interest rate is variable, set annually, with a cap of 8.25 percent. Fees of up to 4 percent may be deducted from the loan amount by the lender.

Graduate students should obtain application forms from the Financial Aid Office. A separate Federal Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) is required from a lender. If the student borrowed while in undergraduate school, the same lender should be used. The Financial Aid Office can provide an MPN through Wesleyan’s preferred lender for first-time applicants. Application processing can take from four to eight weeks.

Campus employment: Undergraduate students who have a demonstrated financial need are given first preference in the campus job market.

International students: Your passport must be valid for six months beyond the date on the Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20AB or IAP-66), which you received from Wesleyan or your sponsoring agency. You are responsible for maintaining the validity of your passport throughout your stay in the United States. The nearest consulate of your home country will revalidate your passport or issue you a new one if that becomes necessary. International students should contact the international graduate student advisor at the OGSS.
