Office of University Relations

318 –330 High Street

As its name implies, the Office of University Relations seeks to develop and maintain ties between Wesleyan and its alumni/ae, parents, and friends, as well as the local Middletown community and the general public. The office promotes local Wesleyan clubs across the country that enlist alumni/ae and parent volunteers in activities including admission recruiting, fund-raising, faculty seminars, social events, service projects, and career networking. The University Relations office also hosts some of the major campus weekends, including Homecoming/Family Weekend, Volunteer Weekend, and Reunion & Commencement Weekend. The University Relations office is also responsible for fund-raising activities, including capital and annual fund campaigns. The Class of 2002 set a record of 90 percent participation in the annual fund.

The University Relations office seeks student help at various times throughout the year, particularly during the major campus weekends and when children of alumni/ae visit the campus for the Sons & Daughters Program. The University Relations Office is helped greatly in these efforts by the Red & Black Society, a student group that undertakes volunteer activities. Students are also employed in the University Relations Office through the work-study program and as interns during the regular academic year. At the end of the year, the office hires a student work force to help prepare for and staff Reunion & Commencement Weekend, which brings more than 7,000 alumni/ae, parents, and family members back to campus.

Locations: The "big white box" at 318 High Street houses the office of the vice president of university relations; it is also the location for the regional programs that work with local alumni/ae and parents across the country. The office also deals with alumni/ae classes and their annual giving. At 330 High Street (the "little house down the driveway," also called the "alumni office") is the Office of Alumni Relations. The office coordinates events on and off campus and works with alumni/ae and parent volunteers on developing events and on planning reunions.

Office of Media Relations

Third Floor, South College

The Office of Media Relations operates a hometown news release program to highlight the accomplishments of students for their local newspapers, as well as other media. New students receive a card at orientation asking for information that will help the Office of Media Relations target appropriate media outlets with information about them. If you have an achievement at Wesleyan that you would like to see mentioned in a hometown release, please call Dianna Hyland at (860) 685-2878 or e-mail her at dhyland@wesleyan.edu.
