UNIVERSITY RESOURCES THAT SUPPORT LEARNING AND STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

Academic Resources

In addition to faculty advising, each student is encouraged to utilize the expertise of the faculty and student life staff to develop a curricular and cocurricular program that is consistent with their goals. You are also encouraged to reflect on your goals, academic plan, and cocurricular activities and modify them to acquire the required capabilities for effective citizenry, leadership, and a life of learning. You may discuss these plans with your deans, faculty advisors, and with members of the administrative support staff.

We take great pride in the broad range of academic resources provided to enhance your experience. Each Wesleyan student has to adjust to change and respond to academic, social, and cultural changes. As you think about your goals and needs, and how to respond appropriately to new experiences and challenges, please use this section of the Student Handbook to identify people, services, and programs that will help you develop effective strategies and appropriate decision-making.

Resources for Students with Learning and Physical Disabilities

Wesleyan University is committed to a diverse community that includes students with documented disabilities who may require learning, sight, hearing, manual, speech, or mobility accommodations to ensure access to education, housing, and recreation. The University provides services and reasonable accommodation to all students who need and have a legal entitlement to such accommodations.

Wesleyan does not offer special academic programs for individuals with disabilities.

Learning Disabilities

Vancenia Rutherford, first-year class dean, serves as the coordinator of services for students with learning disabilities: North College, Room 217, telephone 685-2765, and e-mail: vrutherford@wesleyan.edu.

Students with documented learning disabilities are strongly encouraged to meet with Vancenia Rutherford as soon as their course registration is finalized. Students with learning disabilities are responsible for meeting with Dean Rutherford to provide documentation of their disabilities and to discuss how they may be accommodated within the context of the nature of their disabilities and the requirements for their courses.

Additionally, Professor Anne Greene, director of the Writing Workshop, is available to meet with students to discuss study approaches and techniques in the field of writing that are particularly appropriate for students with learning disabilities. Dean Rutherford will also discuss other types of academic support and services that are available to all Wesleyan students, for example, tutoring programs.

A student who would like to be tested for a learning disability should make an appointment to meet with Dr. Philippa Coughlan, director of the Office of Behavioral Health for Students. After the consultation, a student may choose to schedule an evaluation by an expert professional who is qualified to diagnose learning disabilities. There is a charge for an evaluation by a non-University expert professional. The evaluation should include a comprehensive report with recommendations for addressing the disability.

Physical Disabilities

Richard Culliton coordinates services for students with physical disabilities: North College, Room 109, telephone 685-2775, email: rculliton@wesleyan.edu.

Students with physical disabilities who require accommodation must speak with Richard Culliton, associate dean of student services. Please bring any pertinent medical information that may be useful in determining appropriate accommodations or modifications. After discussing your needs with you, Dean Culliton will work with various offices on campus to arrange for reasonable accommodations. All requests for accommodations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Since making accommodations for students with physical disabilities can be an extensive process that requires considerable advance notice, we encourage you to contact Dean Culliton at your earliest opportunity.

All Wesleyan students are expected to assume responsibility for asking for and obtaining assistance and services that will help them successfully achieve their goals. Class deans, faculty advisors, and other support staff will assist students with many tasks, but it is each student's responsibility to take the initiative to ask for assistance and to remain actively involved in the process by following through with the accommodation process, and agreements, and by complying with deadlines.
