A benefit event to support the
After School Arts & Science Program and Scholarship Fund
The Green Street Arts Center
of Wesleyan University is a three-story arts and education center located in the
heart of Middletown's North End. As part of Wesleyan's Center for Community
Partnerships, Green Street is an integral part of the university's community
engagement effort. Green Street offers an eclectic mix of events, exhibitions,
classes and workshops to a diverse population, serving local individuals and
families, as well as people from more than 25 surrounding towns. Our
high-quality After School Program remains at the core of Green Street's
offering, providing youth with arts education, homework assistance, mentoring,
and nutritious snacks, all in the context of a safe and creative environment.
Every child has a creative spark. Our job at Green Street is to ignite that
spark, by helping our students identify and nurture their talents. Our after
school curriculum includes courses in Sound Recording, Songwriting, Music,
Videography, Art and Science, Photojournalism, Playwriting and Performance,
Choreography, Salsa, Breakdancing, Tap, and Visual Arts. Green Street gives
young people the chance to explore their creativity, increase their self-esteem,
cultivate their appreciation of the arts, and develop practical skills for
everyday life.
The Green Street After School Program is designed to provide affordable, quality
arts education to Middletown area residents between the ages of 7 to 18. We offer
the only multidisciplinary arts programming in a state-of-the arts facility that
is low or no-cost to qualifying families and in such close proximity to their
homes. Over half the students enrolled in our program reside in the North End,
whose predominant population is Black and Latino, with high rates of poverty and
youth-at-risk; our location is so convenient for them that many are able to walk
home after our program. This past year, 98% of all our students received
scholarship awards.
