rivers, picnics, reunions, skimpy clothes, bonfires, family vacations, and
aching bodies, crops of basil, bad moods, corn, cars, camp, lobster, hiking, and
humidity. You'll have weekly short writing assignments and readings by John
Cheever, Chris Offutt, Alice Munroe, Antonya Nelson Louise Erdrich. New and
experienced writers welcome!
Shakespeare and You: The Taming of
the Shrew

Scared of Shakespeare? Doth the name of Shakespeare cause thee to shake in
thy boots? Fear not; help is on the way. In this class, we will talk about the
language of Shakespeare: why it sounds "odd" and why it has survived all these
years as one of the world's treasures. We will work with the text of The
Taming of the Shrew, to be performed this summer by
Art Farm at Middlesex Community College in
the Grove. Our "research" will include attending a performance, as well as a
talkback with members of the production at our last class. In addition to
"Shrew," we will consider modern versions of the story, such as Cole Porter's
Kiss Me, Kate. Within these five sessions, you will not only gain confidence
in listening to Shakespeare but will leave with a set of tools for approaching
the next play on your own:
"And as thou seest the sense behind the rhyme,
Thou wilt join others having a great time."
Summer Reading: The Personal Memoir
Janice Albert
TUESDAYS, June 30, July 7, 14, 21, 28
6:30-8:30pm
Age 16+
Tuition: $95
Minimum enrollment: 5
Who doesn't associate the lazy days of summer with a chance to catch up on
their reading? This session will focus on reading the contemporary personal
memoir. Voices from across the country will tell us of their search for identity
and purpose, of turning points, of inspiration and defeat. We will talk about
their journeys, but also pay close attention to technique and method. If you are
considering writing your own memoir, or have begun it already, you may find that
your summer reading helps you find a new model for your own work. Among the
authors under consideration are Barack Obama (Dreams from my Father), Rebecca
Walker (Black, White and Jewish), Sandra Cisneros (The House on Mango Street),
Anne LaMott (Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith) and David Sedaris (Naked, The
Santaland Diaries). Because many of these titles are available in recorded form,
we will spend some time listening as well as reading and talking. Sign up and
get your gold star for the summer!

This course will examine the craft of
screenwriting. All levels are encouraged and each student will learn the
essential elements of storytelling as well as the step-by-step construction of a
completed, feature length screenplay. Students will develop their own writing
through in-class and take-home assignments and have the opportunity to share
their work in a supportive group setting. Teaching artist Justin Liberman, an
award-winning independent filmmaker, will also give advice on what steps you
should take once you have completed your screenplay.
