Schedule
This preliminary schedule of events is open to all members of the Wesleyan family. Be sure to check back often for changes and additions and upon arrival at Registration (Usdan University Center).
WESeminars
WESeminars are among the most popular and well-attended programs in Wesleyan’s Voices of Liberal Learning series. Interactive and inspiring, WESeminars provide opportunities to revisit the classroom and experience firsthand the academic excellence that is the essence of Wesleyan, with presentations by scholars, pundits, and other experts in their fields. Programs run approximately 60 minutes, followed by audience Q & A. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis unless otherwise noted.
Parent Volunteer Sessions
If you are interested in becoming a Wesleyan parent volunteer or have already been involved in one or more of our parent volunteer opportunities, we hope you will attend some or all of the sessions marked with the Parent Volunteer logo. These sessions will help you learn more about Wesleyan and will provide you with information about being a parent volunteer. They are open to everyone, but they will be of special interest to current or future parent volunteers.

Wesleyan University's Green Street
Arts Center Open House
The Green Street Arts Center of Wesleyan University is a
three-story arts and education center located in the heart of
Middletown’s North End. As the fifth anniversary approaches,
Green Street continues to offer an eclectic mix of events,
exhibitions, classes and workshops to a diverse population,
serving local individuals and families, as well as people from
more than 25 surrounding towns. Green Street’s state-of-the-art
facility includes a sound recording studio, black-box theater,
computer and media labs, and dance and art studios. As part of
Wesleyan’s Center for Community Partnerships, Green Street is an
integral part of the university’s community engagement effort.
Since opening in 2005, more than 15,000 people from Middletown
and the region have experienced Green Street’s programs and
workshops. With its mission of enriching lives through the arts,
Green Street enables people from diverse backgrounds to converge
in one special place, a place that celebrates diversity,
encouraging us all to learn more about our community, appreciate
people’s differences and similarities, and respect who we are as
individuals. Its high-quality Afterschool Program remains at the
core of Green Street’s offering, providing youth with arts
education, homework assistance, mentoring, and nutritious
snacks, all in the context of a safe and creative environment.
An emerald sitting prominently in Middletown’s historic North End, Green Street has become a gathering place for people from all walks and stages of life to join together and explore the arts. Since 2005, more than 245 Wesleyan students have served as homework helpers and teaching assistants in Green Street’s Afterschool Program; an additional 16 have worked as arts administration assistants in the organization; several others have taught classes, workshops, and private music lessons for children and adults. Last year, an estimated 30 Wesleyan faculty and staff were engaged in a variety of volunteer and leadership roles at Green Street, including teaching and serving on the Advisory Board. Through Green Street, a number of Wesleyan faculty have also offered service-learning courses (including dance and music) for Wesleyan students that enhanced their learning and supporting the work of the community. All are welcome to stop by for a guided tour. Light refreshments will be provided. Shuttles will be available between Usdan and Green Street Arts Center throughout the day. WESeminar: The Bells of Old South
College
The South College bells have been ringing for ninety years—now tolling out at noon on weekdays when the University is in session, before and after commencement, and on many other occasions. Wesleyan’s set of twenty-four bells is played by members of Bell & Scroll, a dedicated guild of student bell ringers. Meet the ringers, discover their broad repertoire, and hear a bit of bell history; then climb the sixty-seven steps to the belfry and see the keyboard and hear the bells ringing out over the campus. You may even want to try your hand at ringing. The tour involves climbing a narrow, spiral stairway and (optionally, if you want to see the bells themselves) a rung ladder; space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Introduction: Peter Frenzel, Marcus L. Taft Professor of German Studies, Emeritus, and bellmaster of the South College Carillon Presenters: Justin Bohn '10, Sam Friedman '10, Ann-Marie Illsley '10, Rithi Mathias '10, and Lindsay Walsh '10, all senior members of Bell & Scroll B2/B3, South College |

WESeminar: The Good Men Project
Tom Matlack was interested in beginning a national discussion about men being good fathers, sons, husbands, and workers. To start the dialog, he left big business behind and began documenting the lives of men. His work is captured in a collection of 31 personal essays entitled The Good Men Project: Real Stories from the Front Lines of Modern Manhood published this year. To continue the discussion, Matlack also produced a 60-minute documentary film about the project that offers an emotionally charged and, sometimes, humorous look at how men are redefining their place in the world in the 21st century. His film mixes riveting photography and straight talk from 10 disparate men about their most defining life experiences. Among the men profiled are Pulitzer Prize-nominated war photographer Michael Kamber, renowned yogi Rolf Gates, and bestselling author Mark St. Amant. Join us for a pre-release screening of The Good Men Project, and a talk with writer and producer Tom Matlack. Presenters: Thomas Matlack '86 is the author of The Good Men Project: Real Stories from the Front Lines of Modern Manhood; before turning to writing, he was CFO of The Providence Journal, and later founded his own venture capital firm. Stuart Horwitz is a musician and writer from Tiverton, Rhode Island who is profiled in the The Good Men Project documentary. Tishler Lecture Hall (150), Exley Science Center |

WESeminar: Where on Earth are We Going?
Global Environmental Change And Freshwater Resources: Hope For The Best Or Change To Prepare For The Worst? Freshwater is vital to all living organisms. Humans use water for drinking, irrigating crops, watering livestock, in industry and as a medium to dilute, assimilate and remove wastes. Over the last 50 years, we have degraded rivers and lakes through excessive water abstraction, pollution and by over-harvesting aquatic organisms. River flow has been impeded by dams, and floodplains have been converted for agriculture and urban areas. The human population has doubled to nearly 7 billion and, per capita water availability has declined on all continents. During this period, global climate change has further impacted water resources. Join Professor Osborne for a look at ways climate change and global warming have altered river and lake function and the water resources on which humans rely. Presenter: Patrick Osborne is the executive director of the Harris World Ecology Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He has 30 years experience in tropical ecology research, education and environmental consultancy and was the head of the biology department at the University of Papua New Guinea and Deputy Director of the Water Research Center at the University of Western Sydney in Australia Sponsor: The Robert Schumann Lecture Series in the Environmental Studies Program Tishler Lecture Hall (150), Exley Science Center |

WESeminar: Finding Pete: Rediscovering the Brother I Lost in Vietnam
Peter Morse Hunting ’63 was the first Wesleyan graduate to be killed in the Vietnam War. He and his youngest sister Jill were products of a family that valued service. At Wesleyan, Pete found the intellectual framework for his values and the preparation for his next step in life. As a civilian volunteer in Vietnam, he wrote vivid letters about digging wells, building windmills, and drinking rice wine with the neighbors. He analyzed the U.S. military presence as it shifted from advisory role to combat force, the misdirection of foreign aid, the plight of refugees, and the shifting currents of attitudes among Vietnamese. Pete’s life inspired Jill to work for peace, but first she had to come to terms with his death. Join her as she discusses her quest to explore the mystery of Pete’s death and how it resulted in a book 44 years later. Presenter: Jill Hunting is a former magazine editor and writer on wine and food, and the author of Finding Pete: Rediscovering the Brother I Lost in Vietnam, published by Wesleyan University Press in 2009. She proposed the Book of Remembrance, a sculpture honoring civilians killed in war, for the new headquarters of the U.S. Institute of Peace, currently under construction in Washington, D.C. WESeminar: Valentino: The Last Emperor
In August 2004 Matt Tyrnauer’s Vanity Fair feature on fashion designer Valentino painted an intriguing picture of the designer adored by Jacqueline Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and many other women. Tyrnauer’s behind-the-scenes look at the work of this design legend and his unparalleled life of luxury, plus his almost 50-year partnership with Giancarlo Giammetti, captivated readers and made Tyrnauer believe he should share more about the world of this haute couture icon. In 2006, collaborating with Wesleyan friends Adam Leff ’90 and Carter Burden ’89, Tyrnauer began documenting the life of Valentino, traveling around the world with him over two years, to produce and direct Valentino: The Last Emperor. Join this longtime journalist, now a rising star in the world of documentary film, for a screening of his film, and a post-film talk back with the audience. He’ll discuss what it took to make Valentino and the most important lessons he took away from the experience. Introduction: Joseph Reed, professor of English and American studies, Emeritus Presenter: Matthew Tyrnauer ’91, filmmaker whose 2009 documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor has played in more than 150 cities around the world and been called “a true masterpiece”, “one for the ages”, and “mesmerizing”. WESeminar: The Center for the Humanities at 50:
Wesleyan a Pioneer in Multidisciplinary Studies
This year, the Center for the Humanities turns 50. At its inception, few such centers existed and Wesleyan's set a template for the creation of hundreds more, earning it acclaim as a "genuine pioneer." Founded in 1959, the Center is a nexus for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary study where visiting fellows, Wesleyan faculty, and undergraduates share intellectual pursuits around broad themes, such as "Figuring the Human" or "War". Join us for a discussion about the founding of the Center and its early years, when luminaries as Hannah Arendt and John Cage were fellows. We'll consider C.P. Snow's famous "Two Cultures" essay, which explores the gulf between science and literature, and its connection to the Center. We'll also consider how multidisciplinary work such as performance studies is fostered. This conversation will provide an opportunity reflect on the Center for the Humanities today and Wesleyan's vision for its future. Presenters: Joshua Chambers-Letson, Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for the Humanities and performance studies scholar; Joseph J. Fins '82, MD, chief of the division of medical ethics, and professor of medicine and professor of public health at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center, and former Wesleyan trustee; Jill Morawski, professor of psychology and current director of the Center for the Humanities; Suzy Taraba '77, university archivist and head of special collections. WESeminar: Paper Love: Inside the Holocaust Archives
Last summer, Sarah Wildman was one of the first journalists granted access to the 60 million pages of unexamined archival material in Bad Arolsen, Germany – material that had been closed to scholars, journalists and the public for over a half a century. A year before she arrived in Germany, Wildman discovered letters and telegrams from family members, friends, and a lost girlfriend – all written to her grandfather who fled Nazi occupied Vienna in the fall of 1938. In her talk, Wildman will detail the hopes scholars and survivor families have had for the Bad Arolsen archives, the controversy over the archives’ long-delayed opening, and her own search for clues to her family in the letters she found, learning about those left behind. Introduction: Jeremy Zwelling, associate professor of religion and director of the Jewish and Israel Studies Certificate program. Presenter: Sarah Wildman ’96 is a senior correspondent for the American Prospect and a regular contributor to The New York Times and the Guardian (UK) opinion pages. Hamdan: The Court Decision That Set Limits on Executive Power
In July 2003 President George W. Bush designated that Osama Bin Laden's driver and bodyguard Salim Ahmed Hamdan would be prosecuted with several other Guantanamo prisoners for crimes against the United States. Military defense lawyer, Lt. Commander Charlie Swift, was assigned Hamdan's case and he assembled a team that included Georgetown Professor of Law Neal Katyal and a team from the Seattle firm Perkins Coie, which included Harry Schneider. During the next two years, the Perkins Coie team logged approximately 2,500 hours at no charge to defend a prisoner they had never met. WESeminar: How Do We Talk About
Israel and/or When Does the Personal Become Political?
This presentation brings together six individuals from the Wesleyan community whose views about the Middle East have been shaped by personal, often pivotal, experiences as American Jews and Americans of Lebanese and Palestinian descent. Four of the six are married to each other and their individual journeys are unique. What brings them together is a shared desire to promote open and honest dialogue, which, all too often, is lacking in discussions about Israel and its neighbors. The program will feature an introductory reading from In the Crossing, a play by Leila Buck that tackles some of the same challenging questions that inform this discussion. One half-hour will be reserved for audience comments. This program was organized by Nina Felshin, curator of the Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery and adjunct lecturer in art history. Moderator: Jeremy Zwelling, professor of religion and director of Wesleyan's Jewish and Israel Studies Certificate Program Presenters: Adam Abel '98 is a Brooklyn-based multi-media artist and a Jewish American whose attitudes about the Arab world were deeply affected by a visit to Lebanon when war erupted between Hizbollah and Israel. Rob Abel '65, P'93, P'98, M.D. is an ophthalmologist and a Jewish American, who has worked in both Israel and the Arab world, and participated in a recent diplomatic mission to the Middle East. Rosita "Mike" Abel P '93, P'98 is a Palestinian-Christian-American, and a retired healthcare administrator, whose family lives in the West Bank and Amman, Jordan. Leila "Katie" Buck '98 is an Arab American and founding member and education director of Nibras Arab-American Theater Collective, artistic director of Nisaa Arab-American Women's Collective, and a writer and performer for the New York Arab-American Comedy Festival. Donna Nevel P'99 is a community psychologist, educator, and long-time organizer for Israeli-Palestinian peace and justice; Leila "Katie" Buck '99, Leila ("Katie") Buck '99 was most recently seen as Basima in the critically-acclaimed docudrama Aftermath at New York Theatre Workshop, and has been extensively involved in theatrical work that explores the conflicts and connections between the Arab world and America; Donna Nevel P'99 is a community psychologist, educator, and long-time organizer for Israeli-Palestinian peace and justice; Lev Plaves '10 is a Jewish American whose work to raise awareness about the daily life of individuals in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict led him to spend six months living and studying in the West Bank. CONCERT:
Amy Crawford '05
A former classical pianist turned singer, Crawford always had a love of classic American song. After graduating from Wesleyan in 2005, she sang and played piano in New York City clubs for a few years. Then she decided to revisit the music of her childhood--classic bands and singer/songwriters of the 1960s and 1970s. Recently, she placed third in the renowned Shure/Montreux international Jazz Vocal Competition. She also spent time opening for Ozomatli and Mike Gordon this fall while recording her debut EP. Her sound is undeniably catchy and upbeat and polished with a vintage sheen--with influences that include The Beatles, Dido, Janis Joplin, Elton John, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder and Jon Brion-- that makes Crawford one of the freshest new singer songwriters on the scene. http://www.amycrawfordmusic.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8q6OtPJrRD8 Tickets: Through the Wesleyan Box Office or 860/685-3355. $17 general; $15 senior citizens, Wesleyan faculty/staff, students; $8 Wesleyan students Crowell Concert Hall |

Legacies of Success
Join alumni and students for lunch and discussion at this year’s
first in our career networking series, Unconventional Wisdom:
Legacies of Success; this session will focus on Careers in Law.
The Legacies of Success series was created by two alumni to
facilitate meaningful interactions between successful alumni and
students of color. Get the insider's scoop as our presenter
shares what she wishes she had known when applying to her first
job and reveal the special people and resources integral to her
success. Questions? Contact Persephone Hall at 860/685-2180.

Student A Cappella Concert
Once called the “singing college of New England,” Wesleyan still boasts a strong musical tradition. The many a cappella groups provide an extraordinary showcase of the vocal talent and stage presence of Wesleyan undergraduates. Please join us for this annual event to see—and hear—the a cappella phenomenon firsthand! This is not a ticketed event, however seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
