Medical
Appointments - Monday-Thursday 9am-6:30pm, Friday 9am-4:30pm, Saturday 12pm-3:30pm
Our
ambulatory medical practice is staffed. We are an appointment-based
practice, like your home physician's office. You can schedule an appointment
in person or by phone with our clinical team.
Appointments can be made with our advanced practice
staff.
Students who arrive at the Health Center without an
appointment will be evaluated by our nursing team and treated or scheduled
appropriately.
Serious,
urgent medical conditions and emergencies are given priority in all
cases. Emergencies will be referred to Middlesex Hospital, or other
area hospitals as warranted.

Reproductive
Health Services – Appointment required
Women’s
Health services – Gynecological services including routine
gynecological examination, evaluation and treatment of gynecological
problems, contraception, pregnancy testing, and counseling for sexual
and reproductive health issues and concerns.
Men’s
Health services – provided by a male physician with a longstanding
interest in men's health issues, including assessment and treatment
of problems and just worries concerning the genitourinary system,
assessment following possible exposure to a sexually transmitted disease,
testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, evaluation
and Counseling for male sexual problems, such as impotence, HIV disease
prevention, counseling, and treatment, nutrition, fitness, and weight
management, smoking cessation
Allergy Clinic
–Appointment required
Allergy
injections are administered to students who have already begun receiving
treatment for hyposensitization. You must provide a completed Wesleyan
allergy form, your serum and your allergist’s signed explicit instructions.
Before beginning
your allergy shots, you will meet with the Allergy Clinic RN to plan
a schedule for your allergy treatments.
You must
remain at the Health Center at least twenty minutes (20 minutes) following
your allergy injections.

Immunizations
and other Injections – Appointment required
TB Testing,
Tetanus, Hepatitis A and B, Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR), Meningitis
and other immunizations are available at the Health Center
Travel consultations
and immunizations required for foreign travel are available. Please
schedule your travel consultation at least two (2) months before your
departure to allow sufficient time for immunization series.

Laboratory
Services –by Appointment
Diagnostic
laboratory testing is provided at the Health Center. All laboratory
tests must be ordered by a physician, a nurse practitioner, or a physician’s
assistant.. Most lab work is performed on-site, such as urinalysis,
mono, strep throat, glucose, pregnancy testing. Middlesex Hospital
provides other diagnostic testing order by our practitioners. Student
Health or other health insurance generally covers the cost of external
reference lab services.

HIV
and other Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing & Counseling –by
Appointment
Confidential testing for
exposure to HIV is available at the Health Center and requires a blood
or saliva test. Testing for other sexually transmitted infections is
available and confidential.
All
testing is CONFIDENTIAL. You can be
tested for sexually transmitted infections by appointment when the Health Center
is open; call X2470 or visit the Health Center to make an
appointment. We are open Monday-Thursday 9am-7pm, Friday 9am-5pm, and Saturdays 12pm-4pm.
HIV Testing
Our
HIV COUNSELOR is available on Wednesdays from 9am - 1pm, BY APPOINTMENT
ONLY.
Call x2470 to make an appointment. The HIV antibody test
is best done 3-6 months after your most recent potential risk
exposure.Testing is confidential and
can be done through either an oral (OraSure) test or by a blood test.

Other Sexually Transmitted Infections
Herpes: blisters at time of outbreak can be cultured
to help confirm diagnosis, if necessary –$18
Chlamydia and Gonorrhea: a screening test for both, as early as 1-2 weeks post exposure and
infection -$18
Syphilis: blood test most effective 4-6 weeks or more
post exposure- $10
Trichomonas or other vaginal or cervical
infections: smear of secretions viewed under microscope while you wait.
Time varies from exposure to detectable symptoms - $5.00
Pubic lice (crabs): visual examination –no
charge
Scabies: visual examination –no charge
HPV (genital
warts): usually diagnosed by visual examination of external genitalia
or speculum examination of cervix - no charge

Self
Care Cold Center – no appointment necessary
The Self
Care Cold Center allows you to assess and treat your cold symptomatically
and quickly. Once you complete our Cold assessment questionnaire to
evaluate your symptoms, you can pick up a Cold Care Pack and bypass
an appointment, if you wish. The pack contains information on how
to treat a cold, a disposable thermometer, throat lozenges, cough
syrup, Tylenol and Sudafed.

Dispensary
The
Health Center stocks a variety of prescription and over the counter
medications. Some medications are without cost and others are dispensed
at or slightly above cost. All charges are well below usual and customary
retail prices. Of course, you may have your prescription filled at
area pharmacies if you prefer.

Nutrition
Services –Appointment required
Nutritional
counseling is offered by appointment with a registered dietician.
Services offered include nutritional counseling and education on disordered
eating, therapeutic diets, vegetarian issues, sports nutrition, eating
for wellness, chronic medical problems, and campus dining issues.

Health Services
- Can I schedule an appointment?
Yes, our Health Center
is an appointment-based practice, like your home MD office. You can
schedule your appointment in person, Monday-Thursday 9am-6:30pm,
Friday 9am-4:30pm and Saturday 12pm-3:30pm, or by phone @ 860 685-2470
- Does it matter if I am late for my appointment?
Absolutely! If you arrive
late, you may be asked to reschedule. We ask that you arrive ten minutes
before your scheduled appointment so that you can complete paperwork
and register. That way, you and we will be on time and you will not
have to wait.
- Do I need to cancel my appointment if I cannot keep it?
Yes. If you cannot
keep an appointment, please call well ahead of time so we can offer
this appointment to another student. You can even call us after we are
closed and leave a message.
- Can I call and talk with someone about a health question or
issue or concern?
Yes. Our healthcare team
of doctors and nurses is available to speak with about any health related
questions and concerns.
- Can I be seen without an appointment?
We will always see you
without an appointment in an urgent situation. You will be assessed
by an RN and will schedule appropriate care.
- What if I am sick and can’t get to the Health Center on my own?
A student living
on campus can call Public Safety @2345 and ask to be brought to the
Health Center.
- What if it’s after the Health Center closes and I feel sick?
Call the Health Center
@ 685-2470 and listen carefully to the message. By pressing 2 and leaving
a message with your name, phone number, and reason for your call, the
Health Center physician on call will be automatically paged and call
you back quickly. You must, however, be sure to leave your name and
phone number and stay by your phone after calling!
- If I think I only have a cold, is there anything I can do besides
see a Doctor?
Yes. You can visit
the Health Center and pick up a Self-Care Cold Kit that includes common
over the counter medicine plus a disposable thermometer, cough drops
and other goodies to help relieve some of your cold symptoms.
- Who will know if I visit the Health Center?
Your visits to the Health
Center are strictly confidential. We cannot release information without
your written consent. If you are over 18 years of age, we cannot share
information even with your parents.
- What if I need a Medical Leave?
We expect that you will
be involved in evaluation and treatment for the problems that necessitates
your medical leave and that this is a priority for you.
Your private physician
must contact the University Health Service Medical Director, Dr. Davis
Smith, and provide written documentation related to the necessity
for your medical leave. Your physician’s letter should also include
your plans for evaluation and treatment.
Dr. Smith will review your private
physician’s recommendation and send his recommendation
to your Class Dean and the Dean of the College
Leaves of absence are
for a minimum of one semester. There is no restriction on the number
of semesters that a student may extend a medical leave.
To return to campus after
a medical leave, you must provide documentation to us from your physician
that you are able to return to Wesleyan.
