Professor Fay received his B.A. from Loyola University of Los Angeles (1965) and M.A. and D.Phil. from Oxford (1971), where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

Professor Fay has written three books: Social Theory and Political Practice (1975), Critical Social Science: Liberation and its Limits (1987), and Contemporary Philosophy of Social Science: A Multicultural Approach (1996). He has also co-edited two other books: Louis Mink: Historical Understanding (1987) and History and Theory: Contemporary Readings (1998). His research concentrates on questions about the nature of social inquiry and its relation to politics and ethics.
