Ann-Louise Shapiro received her Ph.D. from Brown University. She is a social and cultural historian of modern France. Her books include Housing the Poor of Paris, 1850-1902 (1985) and Breaking the Codes: Female Criminality in fin-de siècle Paris (1996); she also edited Feminists Revision History (1994).
