The Middletown Mentoring Program is designed to promote confidence and self-esteem in elementary-school children through weekly one-hour meetings with an adult mentor at the student's school throughout the school year.

Among the Middletown-area businesses and organizations participating are Liberty Bank, Stop and Shop, the Middletown Police Department and Wesleyan University. Employees join the program on a voluntary basis. Children who are participants in the program are chosen by teachers and principals. At present there are 79 mentor-child pairings.

The coordinator of the two-year-old program is Lynne Herlihy. She may be reached at the Middlesex Country Chamber of Commerce at (203) 347-6924.

The program is supported by the Middletown Public Schools, Liberty Bank, Farmers & Mechanics Bank, Middlesex Mutual Assurance, Ted Bertz Graphic Design and the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce.
