Saad Handoo’06: BSCP Conference at MIT

The annual science networking conference organized by the New England Board of Higher Education and held at MIT  was an excellent experience to get a view at a behind the scenes look at medical school admissions and the road to medical school.

Discussions were moderated by Deans of Admissions of med schools, such as UMass-Amherst and UConn. Comments and opinions were offered by  medical school counselors in undergraduate institutions, medical school students, and attending doctors.

Some topics discussed included the difference between graduate school curriculum and medical school curriculum and the characteristics of someone who will succeed in Med. school.

The second half of the conference was focused on networking with different people who hold jobs in the science profession. Students were allowed to interact with different research organizations (such as NIH) and pharmaceutical companies (such as Pfizer). Students took advantage of this by exchanging information which could potentially lead to excellent internship / research opportunities.

Conferences like this are another way to test whether a profession in medicine is what one wants to do for their lives. I recommend that you sign up early next Fall. I will attend again. Oh yes, all expenses were paid by HPPI as usual.
