HPPI (Health Professions Partnership Initiative) is a national initiative by the American Association of Medical Colleges to increase the number of disadvantaged students, including low-income, first-generation college and under-represented minority students, entering medical, dental and other health professional schools. It was started in 1992 as Project 3000 by 2000, the name reflecting the original goal to have 3000 minority students enter American health profession schools by the year 2000.
Wesleyan's HPPI Program is a partnership with the University of Connecticut Health Center, one of the nationally top rated medical and dental schools. A pipeline of programs from 9th grade to the post baccalaureate years are in place; obviously Wesleyan is involved in the college years.
We offer several opportunities for academic enrichment as well as clinical and research experience at Wesleyan and at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, CT. In addition there are programs for application and entrance into Medical or other professional schools. The latter includes a free MCAT prep course. All of these activities are funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The State of Connecticut and Wesleyan University. This is money well spent! Over the past four years we have drastically cut the attrition rate of minority students from the sciences and the pre-med path. The data show that this is directly the result of the success of our HPPI participants.
It all begins with the Pre-College Summer Enrichment Program. This is a six week program with all expenses paid and an $800 stipend. Your student contribution( financial aid) will be adjusted with a Wesleyan scholarship.
