POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
JOB TITLE:Director of Public Safety
DEPARTMENT:Public Safety
GRADE:6
RANGE:Commensurate with experience.
TYPICAL DUTIES:The Director, reporting to the Vice President and Secretary of the University serves as a primary resource and advisor to the University on matters related to safety and security and is responsible for the comprehensive operations of the University's Public Safety Department. Wesleyan University has a diverse population of 2700 full-time resident undergraduate students, 180+ full-time graduate students, 300+ faculty and 570 staff situated on a 285-acre campus including more than 100 buildings supporting academic and student services and approximately 250 wood-frame houses lived in by students, faculty and staff.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Plans, organizes, directs and evaluates all Public Safety Department activities ensuring compliance with all laws and ordinances and adherence to all University policies and procedures;
  • Responsible for the University's compliance with the Clery Act;
  • Develops, implements and monitors the effectiveness of campus safety policies and procedures;
  • Develops, monitors and manages an operating budget;
  • Safeguards the lives and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, service providers and University property;
  • Provides administrative and operational support for a 24-hour뤅 days a year department of an unarmed staff of 5 supervisors, and a unionized staff of 17 officers and 3 patrol personnel;
  • Directs and participates as needed with criminal investigations, crime prevention, community relations, special events and security functions. Oversees patrol and parking;
  • Builds upon positive working relationships with the Middletown Police and Fire Departments, the Middletown Emergency Management group and other community organizations;
  • Develops and delivers safety education for first year students, residential life staff and other safety education needs on campus;
  • Develop systems, tools, programs and procedures to meet changing physical, legal and personnel conditions at the University;
  • Works cooperatively with students and student organizations, faculty and staff, the community at-large, and deals successfully with internal and external constituents.

    The successful candidate must have a demonstrated understanding and appreciation of diversity in an environment which celebrates and embraces human diversity, freedom of expression and respect for individuals. The candidate must also have extensive experience in addressing the interest and needs of multi-cultural populations.
  • MINIMUM DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree, preferably in Criminal Justice, Business Administration or related field. Five (5) years of law enforcement/security experience in a management capacity including staff supervision and training. Exemplary leadership skills, strong interpersonal, oral and written communications skills; ability to work collegially; demonstrated knowledge of current issues of public safety and private security functions, computer literacy. Proven knowledge of Clery Act compliance. A post-offer employment physical and police background check are required.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Masters degree, law enforcement/security experience in a management capacity in a multi-cultural college or university setting; demonstrated knowledge of campus life.
