Dual Mentored Summer Research
To encourage cross-fertilization between fields, we have instituted
a separately budgeted component of the summer undergraduate research
program earmarked for students who are jointly mentored by two faculty
in complementing fields. The dual mentored research scholarships
encourage faculty and students to explore ways in which their research
can benefit from interdisciplinary combinations of fields. We envisage
that some of these links may reflect the growing interdisciplinary
field of bioinformatics, joining mathematicians and information
scientists with life sciences. The links may also reflect the increased
emphasis on placing life science research in a societal context,
involving our Science in Society Program faculty cosponsoring students
with life science faculty.
