Wesleyan Science Outreach

The Wesleyan Hughes Program sponsors several activities to encourage involvement of students in the life sciences, including those from under-represented groups. The programs are coordinated with other Wesleyan outreach programs including the Health Professions Partnership Initiative and McNair Program.

Our initiatives include:

  • Summer Research Program for Wesleyan students
  • Wesleyan Hughes Summer Outreach for students from other Connecticut colleges and universities, including from under-represented groups
  • Support for Work Study Research to reduce effects of economic disparities that might otherwise make it difficult for students to undertake term-time research projects.
  • Invited Seminar Speakers: the Hughes Program actively seeks
diversity of backgrounds of invited speakers.
  • Wesleyan Women in Science, supported by the Hughes Program, includes faculty and staff , undergraduate and graduate students. All members of the Wesleyan community who are interested in issues affecting women in science, or in participating in their various activities, are invited to join, regardless of major, gender, or degree.
  • K-12 Science Outreach is supported at various levels, from student volunteers bringing science experiments to local grade schools, to interactions with local science teachers.
  • Visibility, Recruitment, and Public Understanding of Science: Hughes Fellows and Staff present posters on science research at Wesleyan during Fall pre-frosh weekends, and contribute to the spring Celebration of Science Theses.  The Hughes Program has also facilitated topical panels and speakers in response to issues of public interest, such as the Genome Project and Global Warming.
