Summer Research Program
The Wesleyan University Hughes Grant was awarded to encourage
participation and interest in the life sciences by undergraduates. The
grant supports summer research by a large number of Wesleyan
undergraduates; in the summer of 2007, 48 students were supported, some
in conjunction with other funding sources. The Fellowship includes a
stipend and participation in Hughes activities.
Together with their faculty research mentors, Wesleyan students apply for
Hughes Summer Fellowships in the spring semester. The application form should be
completed in consultation with the faculty mentor. Please contact
Maureen Snow (msnow@wesleyan.edu)
for further information.
To encourage cross-fertilization between fields, we have instituted
a separately budgeted component of the summer undergraduate research
program for students who are jointly mentored by two faculty
in complementing fields.
As part of our summer research program, Wesleyan students are joined
by students from off-campus. The program is open to all students
who reside in Connecticut or are currently attending
colleges and universities in the state of Connecticut. Students in
groups under-represented in the sciences, including minorities and
women, are encouraged to apply.
WHSO students perform research in a life science laboratory, and
participate in all parts of the summer research program including workshops and poster presentation. Go to Wesleyan Hughes Summer Outreach for further information and application.
The Hughes Summer Program includes a seminar series given by outside
speakers. The speakers design their talks to be interesting and
valuable for the undergraduate audience of varying scientific
backgrounds and fields.
The summer research program includes a set of workshops addressing
such subjects as writing and critiquing abstracts; use of the Internet
and library reference tools; resumes and career discussions; and and
preparing a poster. There are also specialized minicourses of more
in-depth workshops.
The Hughes summer program includes a special day-long workshop for
all interested students, faculty, and staff on an emerging topic in the
Life Sciences.
The Hughes Summer Program culminates with a poster session in which
Hughes Fellows and other summer research undergraduates present their
research. The 2008 poster session will take
place Friday, August 1 in the Lobby of Exley Science Center. Click for directions on postermaking and
scenes from previous poster sessions.
After the poster session, posters are displayed in the hallways outside
the introductory biology laboratories.
Social Events
Social events during the summer include an opening picnic, a
student-run movie series (as well as invitations to the grad students'
movie series), an almost 4th of July picnic, a softball league, opportunities for science outreach to
local schoolchildren, and occasional field trips and
drop-in lunches, depending on the interests of the students. Athletic
facilities are also open to all participants and the Center for the Arts sponsors concerts and movies.
