Humanities Computing @ Wesleyan: The truth about Network Printing

This document is designed to give an overview of what one needs to know in order to troubleshoot printing troubles.

Truths about the printer.

1) The printer must be turned on.

2) The printer must be connected to the network.

Truths about the network.

1) The network must be operating properly.

2) The print queue where you have sent your job must be functional.

Truths about your computer.

1) You must be logged into Netware.

2) You must mount the volume that contains the print queue.

3) You must have the right to print to that print queue.

These truths manifest themselves differently on different types of machines. You can check if the printer is turned on, and if it is physically connected to the network. You can also tell if you are logged into Netware and if the volume is mounted. It is not so easy to tell if one has the right to print to a particular queue,or if the network is operational, or if the print queue is operating properly.

Before calling or writing to report a printing problem, you should do the following:

  1. restart your computer
  2. log in to netware
  3. mount the volume where the print queue lives
  4. check to see if you have that print queue selected as your printer
  5. try to print a page

One can then monitor the progress of the print job using either the Print Manager (for windows) or the Print Monitor (for the mac). Record any error messages.
