The Stages of Memory: Reflections on Memorial Art, Loss, and the Spaces Between.

The Stages of Memory: Reflections on Memorial Art, Loss, and the Spaces Between.

JAMES YOUNG • U. Mass

NOVEMBER 14 @ 6 P.M. | Daniel Family Commons, Usdan University Center

In this vividly illustrated slide-lecture, James Young will trace what he calls "the memorial's vernacular arc" between Maya Lin's Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., Berlin's Denkmal for the Murdered Jews of Europe, and the National 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero in New York City. At the same time, Young will reflect on his own role as juror in the memorial competitions in Berlin and New York and how these memorial processes attempt to formalize terrible loss without altogether repairing it.
