The W.M.Keck Humanities Computing Project presents a

Combined colloquium and workshop on the application of information technology to teaching

Friday May 9, 1997

Russell House
and
the W.M. Keck Humanities Computing Lab

The first purpose of this event is to describe and discuss some effective ways of using information technology for communicating with students, encouraging them to communicate with each other, and giving them access to various sources of information, including course webpages. The second purpose is to provide interested faculty with the practical skills and hands-on experience necessary for implementing these techniques at Wesleyan. We are scheduling the event now so that people will be able to make use of what they learn in next fall's courses.

The keynote speaker for the day will be WILLIAM HOWARTH, Professor of English at Princeton, a Thoreau scholar and, more recently, a widely cited expert on pedagogical applications of information technology. The Keck Foundation mentors in the Humanities, CARLA ANTONACCCIO (Classical Studies), STEVE HORST (Philosophy), and STEVE ANGLE (Philosophy) will also give brief presentations. After lunch, there will be a tutorial session in the computer lab, with instructions on how to implement some of the ideas presented earlier.

Here is the day's schedule. Morning events will take place at Russell House, afternoon events in the new Keck Humanities Lab, in the basement of Fisk:

9:30-10:30---Talk and demonstration by William Howarth
10:30-11:00--Break (refreshments)
11:00-12:30--Comments and demonstrations by Carla Antonaccio, Steve Horst, and Steve Angle
12:30-1:30---Lunch (provided for participants in afternoon session)
1:30-3:00----Tutorial

We think that this will be an informative and practical program, and hope that you will be able to attend. Seating in the lab is limited, however, and lunches must be ordered, so we must ask you to let Mike Roy (mroy@wesleyan.edu or x2126) know if you would like to participate in the afternoon session. The sooner you do this the better, but last-minute participants will be welcome as long as there is space.
