I need to prepare handouts--comprised of original material other than my own--for a conference.

Is the material in the public domain?

Yes.

• You can make photocopies without getting permission.

No.

Will the conference participants be taking the material with them when they leave campus?

Yes.

• You should treat the handouts as you would a coursepack.
  • Download a Xanedu form, complete one section for each article in your coursepack, print it, and have Ben Brown, Broad Street Books, Wesleyan University Bookstore & Cafe, 860-685-7323, fax: 860-685-7338, email: brbrown@wesleyan.edu, process the request.  You will need to provide a source list for each article. This list will be included with the pack. OR
  • Seek permission on your own. Remember to be clear about how you will use the material.

 No, I will collect and recycle the material at the end of the conference.

• If you add a disclaimer like this one, you can photocopy and use the handouts during your conference. Remember to carefully cite everything.

• • The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the reproduction of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, university libraries and archives are authorized to provide reproductions. One of these specified conditions is that the reproduction be used for academic study, scholarship, or research only. This material has been made available solely for use in this conference. The material may not be distributed to any person outside this conference, electronically or in paper form without specific permission from the copyright holder. If you use a reproduction for purposes in excess of fair use without permission, you may be liable for copyright infringement.
    

My conference will include a multi-media presentation.

You can:

• present visual and audio material inside your academic conference in a face-to-face situation without further permission unless prohibited by the producer.
• keep a copy of your presentation for a limited time. Please see Mulimedia.

You cannot:

• reproduce the multi-media presentation in any form for the conference participants (without getting specific permission from the copyright holders to do so).
