Data and Data Analysis

Information Literacy Guides:

Several data resources are available for Social Science computing at Wesleyan. We currently subscribe to the following online data sources:

Access to US and international macroeconomic data is  available through DataInsight (installed in all labs as an Excel add-in). ResearchInsight (also installed in all labs)  provides access to company specific data (Compustat). Faculty should contact their desktop support person for installation of these applications on their office machines.

See also the Olin Library pages for a complete list of indexes and databases.

Other data sources:

Some data analysis/presentation Web resources:

UCLA's Statistical Computing site: offers learning and reference resources for Limdep, SPSS, SAS, STATA etc.

Rice Virtual Lab in Statistics (primarily teaching resources)

National Atlas of the United States ("... easy to use, map-like views of America's natural and sociocultural landscapes")

How do I request data used in teaching?

Send your request to Helen Aiello who will bring it to the Library's collection development group for consideration.

How do I request a new piece of software?

Contact your Academic Computing Manager for all new software requests. You may refer to the software database at: http://software.wesleyan.edu

What is the process for deciding on upgrades?

In deciding on an upgrade request, we would like to take into consideration:

  • The goal of keeping available software current.
  • The specific nature of the upgrade: Does it add some needed functionality? Often minor upgrades add little functional value to the software, so each case will have to be discussed for its potential merits.

How do we accommodate independent study needs of students that require special data or software?

On a case by case basis. Priority will be given to students working with faculty on specific projects. Existing solutions must be considered before deciding on purchasing additional data or software.
