Classroom Problem Database

Project Objectives: Software that keeps track of all problems that occur in the classrooms. Through the analysis of the data, we can determine if there are particular problems that we need to pay special attention to. Also, preventative maintenance schedules can be integrated into this database. This database will be the central location for all technical information pertaining to classrooms, i.e. last image date, last date bulb in lcd projector was changed, etc....

Resources: Oracle backend with a Perl/html front end.

Netlinx Programming

Project Objectives: Netlinx is a programming language designed to control various AV equipment, such as DVD players, LCD projectors and VCR's. We currently have 20-30 classrooms equipped with Netlinx boxes that use Netlinx control to run the rooms. By run the rooms, I mean, these boxes are responsible for switching video and audio inputs in the classrooms. One of the greatest features of this language is it gives feedback, you can poll a Netlinx box and it will tell you that is has currently been on for 40 minutes showing video from the VCR. It can also determine how many lamp hours are left in the LCD projector, as well as how many hours the VCR and DVD player have been used. I hope to use this language to give reports about classroom use and to help determine our preventative maintenance schedule by identifying which rooms and equipment are heavily used.

Lab Training

Project Objectives: The labs currently have a labor force of approximately 70 students. The goal of this project is to train the students on how to use the equipment in all the classrooms. The students can then add classroom maintenance to their lab duties. Classroom Maintenance is defined as going into a classroom and checking to make sure all the equipment is in a functional state. If a problem is reported, they will report it and it will fall to a pool of technician to fix the problems. Another objective is to train a team of dispatchers that will man x4959, the classroom hotline. They will be trained to administer simple troubleshooting techniques as well as contacting the appropriate ITS personnel to tackle the problem at hand.

Resources: Lab heads organizing their students to attend training sessions.

Dispatcher Page

Project Objectives: A web page designed to assist the student dispatcher who will be manning x4959. The page will inform the student as to which ITS staff member is on call for the day, who is working in each lab and troubleshooting information about each classroom component and room. It is designed to help the student troubleshoot classroom problems over the phone, contact the closest lab consultant to send them to the problems site, as well as contact an ITS staff member.

Project Team: Amit Patel

Status: In the process of gathering information and entering them into a database that will feed the web page.

Timeclock

Project Objectives: A web application where lab students log in at the start of their work shift and logout at the end of their work shift. The goal is to make the paper timesheets obsolete and to replace it with this electronic app. The supervisor of the lab students will get a bi-weekly report that he will have to sign off on before it is sent to payroll.

Project Team: Mike, Ravi, Amit

Status: Tables have been designed and logic discussed. The frontend has to be constructed and connected to the backend.
