Web Page Security System

Goal: provide standard interface for setting permissions on web sites, regardless of authoring environment
Tools: not yet determined
Resources: FrontPage server, WesVal, PeopleSoft course roster and department data

Description:
This project aims to create a single web-based interface for the creation and maintenance of .htaccess files based on the FrontPage security interface. Since the campus is currently using more than one web authoring package, it was suggested that a single interface, based on a design that many people will already be using, would promote its use and make support more straight-forward.

To this end, Jolee created pages that are graphical representations of the security ("Permissions") interface in FrontPage (for Windows). Ravi will create the code behind them, if we decide to go in this direction.

Currently, ITS is examining the WebDAV ("Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning") features in other (non-FrontPage) authoring packages, namely Adobe GoLive and Macromedia's Dreamweaver. It is probable that we will drop support of FrontPage for the Macintosh, since it is much less fully featured than the Windows product, and replace it with either the Macromedia or Adobe environment. If these products have security facilities that co-exist well with FrontPage, then this project may be permanently tabled.
