Mission
The mission of the Academic Technology Advisory Committee (ATAC) is to provide a
forum for faculty to collaborate with ITS and other relevant service providers
on campus in enhancing the appropriate use of information technology in all
aspects of academic life on campus. The committee is comprised of four
faculty members, representatives from the Office of Academic Affairs, ITS, the
library, and (as needed) other departments. We meet regularly to
discuss a broad range of topics that arise. Such topics include:
- choosing classrooms for renovation as part of the Classroom
Improvement Program
- faculty development strategies (webtech, faculty resource room)
- desktop computing policies and procedures
- appropriate use of network resources
- funding for instructional software
- programming for the Academic Technology Roundtable speaker series
(including choosing outside speakers to come to campus to talk about
teaching, learning, and scholarly communication).
- evaluation of existing and planned services (labs, software, web tools,
etc.)
In addition to these fairly concrete issues, the committee will work together
to develop a more strategic approach to instructional support, looking more
closely at the various service points that exist on campus and attempting to
identify places where synergies might exist, as well as bottlenecks that inhibit
growth. It will also serve as a sounding board for larger campus-wide strategies
surrounding technology including:
- instructional management systems
- the electronic portfolio
- campus portals
- best practices in applying technology to teaching
