Home Computing: Instructions for Connecting to Wesleyan via DSL or Cable Modem

Connecting to your router

  1. Connect one cable from the DSL Modem or Cable Modem to the SMC Router WAN port
  2. Connect a second cable from any numbered port on the SMC Router to the Ethernet port on the computer (unless your computer is configured for wireless networking).

Your router performs the following functions:

  • Assigns an Internet address to any computer connected to it
  • Acts as a Firewall to protect you computer from attacks and security breaches

Establishing a VPN connection to Wesleyan

If your computer has been configured with the VPN client software:

  1. Double-click on the 'Connect to Wesleyan' icon on your desktop
  2. Enter your Condor username and password. Please contact ITS Operations at x2128 if you do not know your password or need to have it re-set.
  3. You will see a message stating "Wesleyan University. Unauthorized Access Prohibited - Admin Group". This indicates that you have established a connection. Click Continue and wait until the screen clears.

Establishing a Remote Desktop Connection to your campus computer

  1. Double-click on the Remote Desktop Connection icon on your desktop
  2. Enter your username and password
  3. It will take a few moments for the remote screen to load

Remember that when you are in a remote control session, you are actually controlling the computer in your campus office. If you tell it to print, it will print to your campus printer. Any sounds played will play in your office. If you copy a file to a floppy it will look for a disk in your office computer. However, you can re-direct these functions to your home PC:

  1. Double-click on the Remote Desktop Connection icon on your desktop
  2. Click on the Options button
  3. Click on the Local Resources tab
  4. From here you have the options to play sounds on your home computer, and to automatically connect to your home printer, disk drives, or serial ports. Select the options that you want from this screen and click OK.
