Accessing Data on Dragon

Files on Dragon are available from non-campus locations via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). You will need an FTP client installed on your computer. Below are instructions for using FTP on both a PC and a Macintosh.


FTP from a PC

The standard package in use at Wesleyan is WS_FTP (LE).

To access Home Folder on Dragon via FTP
  1. In the Host Name/Address box, type dragon.wesleyan.edu
  2. In the User ID box, type in your Email username and password. Your username must be typed: wesleyan\username
  3. Type your Email password in the Password box
  4. Click OK
  5. You will see a list of all of the Home folders for the Wesleyan departments and student class years displayed in the box on the right. Double-click on the folder for your own department or class year to open it and see your own home folder.
  6. To download files, click on the file on Dragon (the window on the right) to highlight it, then click on the arrow pointing left to copy it to your local machine.
  7. To upload files to Dragon, click on the file on your local machine (the window on your left) to highlight it, then click on the arrow pointing right to copy it to Dragon.
To access other folders on Dragon via FTP
  1. Click on the ChgDir button
  2. Type in a slash (/) and the name of the folder you wish to access (i.e. ECONData). If you are accessing a departmental data folder and do not know the exact name, type in /data and you will see all of the folders listed. You can then double-click on the one you want.

FTP from a Mac

The standard Macintosh FTP software is Fetch. Open the program and follow the instructions below:

  1. In the Host type dragon.wesleyan.edu
  2. In the User ID box, type in your Email username and password. Your username must be typed: wesleyan\username
  3. Type your Email password in the Password box
  4. Click OK
  5. You will see a list of all of the Home folders for all Wesleyan departments and student class years as well as the Data folders for all Wesleyan departments. Double-click on the folder for your own department or class year to open it.
  6. If you have opened a home folder for your department or class year, you will see your personal Home Folder listed among the others in your group. Double click on it to open it.
  7. If you have opened a departmental folder, you will see the files and folders within it and can choose the one you wish to work with.
  8. To download files to your local computer:
    • Click on the file name to highlight it
    • Click on the Get button
    • By default the file will be saved to your desktop
  9. To upload files to Dragon
    • Click on the Put Files button.
    • A new window will open showing your local machine. Locate the file you want to transfer and click on it, then click on the Choose button.
    • Another box will open allowing you to change the file name if you choose.
    • Click OK
    • The file will be copied to the currently open folder on Dragon.
