Using REMOTE DESKTOP

Controlling a Macintosh OS X Computer from a Windows PC

 

Requirements:

  • Your Macintosh computer must be running Mac OS X 10.3 or later
  • The campus computer must be turned on and connected to the network

    The off-campus computer must have :

  • High-Speed Internet Connection (DSL or Cable Modem)
  • VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection to campus

    (Information on using VPN can be found online at: http://www.wesleyan.edu/its/vpn)

Preparing your campus Mac:

  1. From the Apple menu on the top left of your screen, choose System Preferences
  2. Click Sharing
  3. Click on the box next to Apple Remote Desktop and look at the bottom of the window. 

 It will say "Others can manage your computer using the address your computer addresss".   Make a note of the address displayed.

  1. Click Access Privileges
  2. In the window that appears, check the box for VNC viewers and enter a password
  3. Click OK to close the settings for Remote Desktop
  4. Close the Sharing window
  

Installing VNC Software on your Windows PC

To control a Mac that has been configured for Remote Desktop  you must have a VNC client program and know the address of the computer you wish to control (see above).  

We recommend UltraVNC, a free program available at the following link: http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=ultravnc&filename=UltraVNC-102-Setup.exe&use_mirror=superb-east

  1. To download and install the program:
  2. Click on the link above and you will see the Download page and a dialog box  with Save to Disk selected.  Click on OK
  3. The installation file will be saved to your desktop

 

  1. Click on the Setup icon on your Desktop to install UltraVNC
  2. Follow the screen prompts - accept the license agreement and click on OK or Next at each step.  At the Select Additional Tasks screen, check "Create UltraVNC desktop icons"
  3. Click Finish when complete

To start a Remote Desktop Session

  1. Double-click on the UltraVNC Viewer icon on your Desktop
  2. Type your computer name (as you noted it above) in the VNC Server box.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  1. Click on Connect

  2. Type in the password you set when you configured your Mac for Remote Desktop and click Log On

 

 

Your Mac OS X desktop will appear on your screen. 

When you are done with your session, just close the window or click on the Close Connection icon at the top of the screen.
