WebMail is Wesleyan's web-based email program.   This easy-to-use email program can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection.   If your Wesleyan Electronic Portfolio is open, click on WebMail under Tools and Links.  Alumni can access WebMail from their WesNet account under the Alumni Resources menu. Otherwise, open a browser and type webmail.wesleyan.edu in the address bar.

  • How can I get my email to appear in a different order?

By default, the mail in your email folders appears in date order.  You will see a small triangle next to the Date heading. This indicates that your email is being sorted by the selected column. To select a different order, click on the small square next to the heading by which you wish to sort.  When you click on the square, it will become a triangle, indicating that this is now the primary key for sorting. You can also reverse the order by clicking on the triangle.  It will reverse direction, indicating that the sort order has now been reversed.

  • Can I sort my email by the size of the messages?

Yes.  Just click on the small square next to the Size heading.  It will turn into a small triangle.  Click on it again to reverse the sort order.

  • Can WebMail help me control Spam?

The spam filtering system can be activated by clicking on the Options menu and then on Spam Filter Configuration.   This screen allows you several ways to reduce the amount of spam you receive:

General Settings:  Follow the directions on the screen to activate spam filtering and set the level of sensitivity you feel is appropriate.  You will be asked to select one "Spam Score" at which items will be tagged as spam in the subject line and a second score or "Action Threshold" at which an action that you select will be taken ( Move to Spam Folder, Delete Immediately, Do Nothing).   Higher scores will result in more lenient scoring and fewer items will be tagged as spam.  Lower scores result in more items tagged as spam but also increases the possibility that legitimate mail will also be tagged.

Global Allow/Deny Address List:  From this screen you can also create a Whitelist (those senders whose mail should always be allowed) or a Blacklist (those senders whose mail should always be treated as spam).

You can also 'train' your system to recognize the types of messages you want tagged as Spam.  Near the top of your screen just below the menu items there are a number of buttons including two labeled "Spam" and "Not Spam".   While in your Inbox, click on the box to the left of a message to select it and then click on either Spam or Not Spam On the left side of the screen under your folders names you will see commands for HamLearn and SpamLearn

No spam filtering system will be able to eliminate all spam, but the quantity should decrease noticeably.

  • I received a message saying that I had exceeded my email quota, but my INBOX is empty.

Items in your other folders also count toward your email quota.  Check your Sent folder and make sure that mail has not accumulated in your Trash and Spam folders.  You can empty the Trash and Spam folders by clicking on the (purge) command that appears next to each of them.  This command does not appear when the folder is empty.

  • I accidentally left the Compose screen before completing my message.  Can I get it back?

You message was automatically saved.  When you return to the Compose window you will be asked if you want to restore it.  Just click on OK and resume editing that message.

  • I don't like the colors or the screen layout.  Can these be changed?

You can change many aspects of Webmail's appearance by clicking on Options and then on Display Preferences.  You can control color schemes, fonts, and many other aspects of how the screens are displayed.

  • How can I change my email password?

Passwords should be changed in your Electronic Portfolio.   Under Tools and Links, select Password Manager.   If this link is not available in your Portfolio, please contact ITS Operations at x4100 (860-685-4100).  Alumni should go to the Tools & Links section of their WesNet account and select Change Password.

  • Can I have my email forwarded to a different email account?

Yes.  The following link will let you to forward your email to a different email account:  http://www.wesleyan.edu/cgi-bin/redirect.cgi. Alumni can forward their email using Email Forwarding in the Tools & Links section of WesNet.
