Network Printing

Your computer should be configured to print to a printer in your department. Some types of printing jobs run on printers located in ITS and are delivered to appropriate departments several times daily.

Your Network Desktop Support Specialist can configure your computer to print to a device in your department or you may follow the instructions below.

Configuring a Network Printer on a Windows PC

In order to print, you need to configure your PC to recognize the printer to which you will be printing. First access the Printer Wizard by following the steps below.

  1. Click on the Start button, go to Settings and select Printers
  2. Double-click on Add Printer
  3. Click on Next

Once you are in the Printer Wizard, you need to identify the printer you will be using. If you are connecting to a lab printer, the location will be //falcon/printername. You must type the name of the printer exactly; contact the lab consultant for printer names.

The printer you have chosen will now appear in the Network Path box. You will be given the choice to make this your default printer. Once you have made your choice, hit finish.

Configuring a Network Printer on a Macintosh

In order to print, you need to configure your Macintosh to recognize the printer to which you will be printing.

  1. Under your apple menu, click on Chooser.
  2. Click on the laser writer 8 icon in the top left hand box in the Chooser.
  3. In the AppleTalk Zones box, scroll to FS3 or FS4 and highlight the desired Netware file server. (if your class year is an even number choose FS4 and if it is odd number, choose FS3)
  4. Under Select a Postscript Printer, you will see a list of available printers in alphabetical order. Scroll down until you have identified your dorm’s printer (you may need to ask your RCC)
  5. Double click on the printer name.
  6. You may be prompted for configurations. Click on OK to accept the default configurations.
  7. Close the Chooser by clicking on the top left-hand square in the Chooser window bar.
  8. You have now successfully configured and set up your Mac printer.
