A Guide for Working with Digital Media

This guide defines standards for producers of online digital media who wish to reach members of the Wesleyan community. It was developed by Information Technology Services, Language Resource Center, and Library staff to ensure that online media work well with their facilities and services. Follow these standards to be sure that your audience has a successful experience. If you have a suggestion or question, please contact Digitization Services, your academic computing manager, or the LRC director.

Linking media to be sure it plays
Because browsers and media players can be configured in many different ways, it is important to control how the media you link in your page will be played. This is particularly important in the classroom or for a presentation. This section provides recommendations for linking media to ensure performance in the computer labs and classrooms.

File types and encoding
Using the right file types, image or window sizes, and encoding or compression settings is critical to providing a quality experience for all users. This section provides detailed help with these issues.

Directory locations
Media files need to be stored in specific directories on web and streaming servers to be available. This section reviews the media directory structure that has been created for faculty and staff.

Media Database guide
This section is a guide to the Media Database, a core service for faculty and staff who wish to associate descriptions with media files and assemble them into shared collections on the web.
