File types and encoding

The following recommendations are directed at a diverse population of Windows and  Mac users on campus, as well as an off-campus audience with broadband and dial-up connections. There are emerging formats which may be superior in some ways to these supported standards. We will endorse new formats as browsers and players mature to fully support them in our environment.

Note that  these recommendations support the creation of digital materials for teaching and learning. They do not  address issues of preservation.

This chart displays recommendations for image capture methods with output to the screen. A few notes:
  • An archival copy file should be saved for most images.
  • Always save scans as TIFFs when working with Digitization Services or any other campus production center.
  • The quality settings referenced below are from Photoshop.
  • Faculty who need PDFs for electronic reserves should contact the library, x3852, which will seek copyright clearance and control access to the files through its ERes system. The library does not provide other assistance with PDFs.
