Media Database Workspace
Getting Started –
Overview and Tips
Media Database defined
The Media Database Workspace is a
place where media files (images, video, audio, animations or texts ) can be
uploaded and organized for sharing on the web, either within the Wesleyan
community or, if the owner chooses, to the world at large.
Accounts
Users need a Media
Database account and media directories. First-time users should contact their
academic computing manager or language resource center director for assistance.
Digitization
Users may prepare their
own media or contact Digitization Services, x4959, for assistance. It is
essential that media is prepared in accordance with Wesleyan
standards.
Acceptable File Types
The following file types and file extensions will be recognized for upload and
display in the Media Database:
Image: jpeg, jpg, gif, png, bmp, tiff, tif, pdf
Video: mov, mpg4, mp4, m4v, wmv, dv, flv, avi, swf
Audio: mp3, aiff, wav, aif, wma, m4b
A Three Step Process
The following steps are
explained in detail in following sections of this document.
1. Create a
collection or group and upload media
2. Describe
the uploaded media
3.
Organize the media ‑- sort, add to groups/lectures, etc.
Navigation
Use either the menu choices on the home page or the tabbed menus which
repeat these choices at the top of every screen.
Refresh – If the word ‘refresh’ pops up in yellow on your screen in yellow, click on it to be sure to display the results of a recent action.
Media organization
Media Database (all
sharable media in the database)
My Media (all of a user’s media)
Collections (created by user)
Groups
(sub-groups within collection, often used to define lecture)
Working Off-Campus
When working
off-campus, connection to the Media Database must be made through the Proxy
Server. The proxy server makes your machine appear to be on the Wesleyan
network and provides access to media restricted for viewing to the Wesleyan
campus.
Batch Title
Batch title is useful
if you are uploading many similar items. If, for example, you had 20 images from
the Sistine Chapel, you might enter ‘Sistine Chapel’ as the batch title, which
would be applied to every image in the upload batch. In the next step, Add Info
to Media, you could add detail to the title or in the description field.
Exiting the ‘lightview window’
To leave the white inset window that presents a number of forms either click
on the circle inscribing and X, or click anywhere outside the white box.
Browser
If you are prompted in IE about allowing secure and non-secure items, follow
these instruction to change your security settings: http://www.wallpaperama.com/forums/windows-disable-this-page-contains-both-secure-and-nonsecure-items-t274.html
