ITS Domain Name Policy and Procedures

updated January 2011

ITS offers faculty and staff a service to host either a domain name (e.g. www.myorganization.org ) on a departmental or personal machine on the Wesleyan network, or an IT-managed machine which will answer to a non-Wesleyan name (e.g. www.myorganization.org ). ITS also offers the option to host a top-level website in support of faculty and staff professional activities (e.g. www.wesleyan.edu/myorganization ) This document identifies the terms under which this service is offered. Faculty can get help interpreting this policy by contacting their Academic Computing Manager. Staff can get help from the Director of Administrative Systems. Users of this service should be aware that the normal restrictions both on disk space (the size of the site) and bandwidth (the amount of data transferred over the network) pertain.

Wesleyan Hosted Domain Names and Sites:

  • cannot be used for profit
  • are restricted to Wesleyan faculty and staff
  • are restricted to, and must be related to, the web site owner's professional responsibilities at Wesleyan
  • must adhere to Wesleyan Computer Usage Policy
  • remain the primary responsibility of the web site owner
  • may be discontinued 30-60 days after the web site owner terminates from the University unless other arrangements have been made
  • will contain "Hosted by Wesleyan" on the home page of the web site; Wesleyan will be a link to Wesleyan's homepage

Process for hosted domains (i.e. mydomain.org):

  • User notifies either his/her Academic Computing Manager (ACMs) or the Director of Administrative Systems (DAS) who then educate web site owners about policy and process
  • Web site owner applies for domain name registration through Network Solutions and pays fees directly to Network Solutions. While there are many domain hosting options, Wesleyan has selected Network Solutions to register domains. In order to manage multiple domains effectively, we ask all facutly/staff who wish to register a domain for University purposes to use them.
note: use the university template as a guide for filling out the Network Solutions form
  • Network Solutions notifies Wesleyan's Network Administrator that domain name has been registered
  • ACM or DAS works with the web site owner to complete the process

Process for top-level sites (i.e. mydomain.wesleyan.edu):

  • User notifies either his/her Academic Computing Manager (ACMs) or the Director of Administrative Systems (DAS) who then educate web site owners about policy and process
  • Either the ACM or DAS will confirm authorization by email to the web owner and ITS Administrators
  • Web Administrator creates directory for the site
  • ACM or DAS works with the web site owner to complete the process
